Patients on the blood thinning agent warfarin may now have an easier alternative. In the lead up to the federal election the government suddenly decided to subsidise Pradaxa and Xarelto. Both of these new drugs are as effective as warfarin but without the interaction with foods and drugs that the warfarin has and without the need for blood monitoring and dose adjustment. The listing is restricted to those patients with atrial fibrillation and another risk factor for stroke. It is not listed for valvular heart disease.
